port silliness

So, this whole "port security" thing is pretty silly.

Foreign companies already run the majority of major U.S. ports; they don't run the security, though, and nothing about that is going to change. Bush is exactly correct.

Check out the LA Times editorial or the CSM article for the basics of the situation.

The sad story here belongs to Clinton, Menendez, Lautenberg, Boxer and others who are trying to score points on this one. Oh no, those Arabs are going to let the terrorists in!

Today some media got a bit sharper on this story, and I hope the media that haven't understood the basics yet figure it out soon. Meanwhile, these senators have dug themselves in and are now going to be busy on this issue for the next week or whatever, pressing boldly ahead to save our freedoms and then any day now looking for an exit strategy for themselves from this story (say, "our concerns were always legitimate and now we are confident that they have finally been fully addressed"). I hope they're exposed for being the racist frauds they are.

It will be interesting to see which groups on the left criticize these Dems in the coming days.

Feingold '08 all the way.

By popular demand: FOS

FRENCH ONION SOUP

-Thinly slice 3 large spanish onions
-mince 1 or 2 cloves of garlic
-saute both, over medium heat, in a very large pan with 4 T butter and 2 T vegetable/canola oil. Cook them until they get, you know, cooked, but not browned

Meanwhile, in a large pot, heat 6 C vegetable stock. (do as much as 8 C if you want lots of soup).
-Add the cooked onion and
-Quarter cup tamari
-Quarter cup white wine
-Half tsp thyme
-dash pepper

Cook on stove for 1 hr, tightly covered, on medium heat

In serving bowls, place a slice of baguette each. Ladle soup on top, and then sprinkle grated cheese. Gruyere is traditional, but I think cheddar works quite well. Ideally it is broiled, if you have bowls that can do that, but if you drop the cheese on boiling-hot soup that will certainly do.

YUM.

them Danish cartoons

I was looking for some analysis of the situation with those cartoons to help explain why the conventional analyses we are hearing are wrong.

I found this piece by Rahul Mahajan.

Anyone else find any interesting reading on this?

the witty one from vermont

From Monday's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Alberto Gonzalez:

"Of course, I'm sorry, Mr. Attorney General, I forgot you can't answer any questions that might be relevant to this." -Sen. Leahy
