I was looking for some analysis of the situation with those cartoons to help explain why the conventional analyses we are hearing are wrong.

I don't really feel too strongly either way on this issue, but what's interesting is that if you look at the cartoons, they seem to have anticipated the reaction and even relished their role as provocateurs. Say what one will about who's right or wrong, no one should be surprised or outraged that a deliberate provocation was interpreted and reacted to as such. Some of the cartoons seem oddly meaningless and have the character of a notebook doodle, though...
