Actually a lot of people in LA do take public transportation
Matt Yglesias had a useful post about this the other day. A million people in fact take transit there, literally. And here's a chart that compares various U.S. cities.

Remarkable - Chicago and Philadelphia are directly atop one another - I always think of them as having similar development patterns- hub-and-spoke rail cities with lots of streetcar suburbs, that only later, and incompletely, devoted themselves to the automobile. It's also noteworthy that Portland is actually pretty close to LA in terms of transit use, but has less car commuting - biking fills the gap.
