No really, the 2nd Ave subway is happening

I know, it's hard to believe, because people have been talking about the 2nd ave subway for the better part of a century. But it's really happening -- or at least the first segment, which will be an extended Q train from midtown up to 96th street. As for the other parts, we'll see. (I'll wait for matthew to chime in here with an informed comment).

This photo is one of a batch that MTA just posted the other day. The full gallery is here; I found it via the highlights posted at the blog 2nd Ave Sagas.

Okay, now I'll comment: yes, it's really happening. The first phase will be a Q train extension - from its current terminus at 57th Street & 7th Avenue, the Q will now run up under Central Park and across 63rd Street (in an existing tunnel) allowing a transfer to the F at Lex & 63rd, then swing up 2nd Avenue with stops at 72nd, 86th, and 96th. The next phase, which I'm sure will happen within a few years of schedule, will go up to 125th and include some kind of connection to the 4,5,6 and Metro-North. The next phase - somewhat further in the future, so bets are off as to timing - will go down to Houston Street, and then eventually to Hanover Square, on Water Street and William Street in Lower Manhattan.

Here's a handy drawing of the first phase:
